Dreams and Metamorphoses: The Surrealism of Paula Rego
The Cupertino de Miranda Foundation and the D. Luís I Foundation are honoured to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Dreams and Metamorphoses: The Surrealism of Paula Rego, which will take place on Friday, 11 April, at 6:30 PM at the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation in Vila Nova de Famalicão. The exhibition is curated by Catarina Alfaro, Marlene Oliveira, and Perfecto Cuadrado.
The exhibition will be open to the public until 4 January 2026.
Paula Rego is one of Portugal's most prominent artists, internationally recognised for the expression and narrative in her works. Her art addresses themes such as the female condition, politics, literature, and popular culture, using a unique visual language that blends the dreamlike universe with reality. Her works feature a strong surrealist expression, combining the unconscious, the bizarre, and imaginary beings with real events.
In 2025, she would have celebrated her 90th birthday, and this exhibition is a tribute to her life and work, offering a fresh perspective on her art. The exhibition, in partnership with the D. Luís I Foundation, presents a selection of paintings, drawings, and prints representative of various stages of the artist's career, with a particular focus on surrealism.
It includes loans from various public and private entities.
